    Angela Hewitt was the soloist on 5 October in the world premiere in Ottawa, Canada, of the piano concerto Nameless Seas by Matthew Whittall. Hannu Lintu conducted the National Arts Centre Orchestra. The concerto was commissioned jointly by Piano Espoo Festival and the National Arts Centre Corporation. The Finnish premiere is scheduled on 10 November by the Finnish RSO with Risto-Matti Marin as the soloist.

    Fennica Gehrman has entered into a publishing agreement with Esa Pietilä, a well-known saxophonist operating with different musical genres in a creative way. As a composer, he has broadened the image of contemporary music with jazz. He has been commissioned to write works for the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra, Zagros Ensemble, UMO Jazz Orchestra and others, and has also written music for solo instruments, instrumental groups, dance projects and films. The new agreement covers 10 works, including Graffiti Play for chamber orchestra and contemporary jazz trio, and Hunt! for saxophone and percussion quintet.

    The Finnish Music Publishers Association has chosen Harri Vuori as Classical Composer of the Year. According to the jury “Vuori is a unique and distinctive voice in Finnish classical music. He successfully combines modernism with nature mysticism, robust structures and enchanting timbres. His music, both orchestral and chamber, also offers surprises but is, in its profoundest meanings, rooted in the classical music tradition.

    Lotta Wennäkoski's new work Flounce was premiered succesfully at the Last Night of the Proms on 9 September in London. The BBC commissioned Wennäkoski to write this opening piece, and it was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo. According to the reviews the piece was "deft and surprising", "it may work as a concert-opener, but that’s by no means all that it is, and for that she deserves kudos and congratulations."

    September was an exceptionally busy month with orchestral premieres. The Guards’ Band and  Antti Ohenoja commissioned a Marimba Concerto from Timo-Juhani Kyllönen (premiere on the 5th in Helsinki). Lotta Wennäkoski's Flounce was heard at the Proms in London on the 9th. Juhani Nuorvala’s Variationes ex 'Bene quondam' commissioned by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra saw the light of day on the 16th. Kalevi Aho’s Chamber Concerto for Harp and Strings was premiered at the Gent Festival, Belgium on the 18th by the Ensemble Resonanz and Anneleen Lenaerts, harp. Kimmo Hakola’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Chamber Orchestra was on the programme of the Tapiola Sinfonietta on the 22nd. The soloists were Antti Tikkanen and Minna Pensola.

    The Percussion Concerto Sieidi by Kalevi Aho is becoming the modern Finnish concerto most often performed worldwide. Austrian virtuoso Martin Grubinger is to be the soloist 12 times at major German and Austrian concert halls during the 2017/2018 season. The orchestras are the Dresden Philharmonic, the Bavarian, Southwest German and West German Radio Orchestras and the Bruckner Orchestra in Linz. Grubinger has previously performed it at the Gewandhaus, the Vienna Konzerthaus and the Helsinki Music Centre. Colin Currie was the soloist at its premiere in London with the London Philharmonic in 2012 and he has also performed it in numerous other countries such as Finland, Sweden, UK, Germany, USA, Canada, Netherlands, Spain, New Zealand and Australia, and he is also plannig new performances.

    The opera Aino Ackté by Ilkka Kuusisto is to be premiered in Savonlinna on 27 October. There will be five performances in all, two of them in Helsinki in November. The producer is the South Savo Music Theatre and Opera Society ESMO. Singing the title role will be Päivi Pylvänäinen, and the conductor will be Jonas Rannila.
