    X'seven (2010/18) is the final piece of a solo cello suite consisting of seven compositions which can be performed individually or detached with another X-composition. The works are composed by using the same material viewed at different angles. In the first compositions of X-suite seemingly random fragments join together piece by piece as the work goes on combining one into another organically.

    Venezuelan trumpet virtuoso Pacho Flores asked Tuomas Turriago to write a piece for a recital in April 2019. The composer tells: "My half-Colombian soul fell in love with the Venezuelan dance merengue at once when it was introduced to me and it has been an important construction material in my music ever since. I decided to combine two of my favourite rhythms, tango and merengue; hence the name Tanguerengue. It is one of my happiest compositions and gives an enormous amount of room for groovy rhythmical play and limitless trumpet virtuosity."

    NEWS & EVENTS

    The University of Turku has commissioned Mikko Heiniö to compose a work for its centenary celebrations in 2020. Titled Syvyyden yllä tuuli (Wind above the Depths), it will be premiered in February 2020 and at the degree ceremony in May. It is scored for baritone, mixed choir and orchestra and will be performed by the Turku Philharmonic and the Turku University Choir. Heiniö has also written a work for The Polytech Choir, titled Täällä, kaikkialla (Here, Everywhere), to be performed as part of the choir’s 120th anniversary in spring 2020. It is based on poems by Juha Vakkuri (1946-2019). Heiniö was awarded in September when the Finnish Music Publishers Association chose him as Classical Composer of the Year.

    Jyrki Linjama’s church opera Three Letters to Laestadius (Kolme kirjettä Laestadiukselle) will be performed in Oulu Cathedral on 12 October, as part of Oulu’s contemporary music festival.The title role will be sung by Esa Ruuttunen, baritone, and the stage director is Michael Baran, who wrote the libretto with Linjama. The Soli Deo Gloria chamber orchestra will be conducted by Juhani Lamminmäki.

    Erkki-Sven Tüür will be 60 on 16 October. His composing career started in the late 1980s and the early works still popular today include Zeitraum, the Architectonics  series and Action-Passion-Illusion  for strings. In his own words, his pieces are abstract dramas in sound, with an extremely dynamic chain of events. Since 1992, Tüür has been a freelance composer who has received commissions from renowned performers worldwide. He has been especially prolific in writing orchestral works and concertos, but his catalogue also includes chamber music, choral works and an opera.

    The Carice Singers have appointed Matthew Whittall Associate Composer.  “I’m thrilled to begin this relationship with The Carice Singers,” he says. “Their fresh, pure, youthful sound is hugely inspiring for a composer, and their varied and sensitive programming takes listeners on journeys that forge poetic links across nations and centuries. To get to write a large-scale piece for such a front-rank ensemble is a dream come true!” The Carice Singers are a British vocal ensemble of young professional singers conducted by George Parris.

    Fennica Gehrman has signed a publishing agreement for a Concert Overture by Sibelius. Based on material found while studying the manuscript of the opera The Maiden in the Tower, it was discovered by the conductor Tuomas Hannikainen, following references made by Sibelius himself. A significant work that, according to Hannikainen, stands up well on its own, it lasts 11–12 minutes and was conducted by Sibelius at concerts of his works in Turku. The score is scheduled for publication in autumn 2019.

    The opera Flash Flash – Two Deaths of Andy Warhol by Juhani Nuorvala is now at Yle Areena and available also to viewers outside Finland. The text in English is by Juha Siltanen and the production was directed by Erik Söderblom. Flash Flash has enjoyed cult status on the Finnish opera scene; it is seductively melodious, pop-inflected, absurd and thrilling. It was premiered on 9 February and received additional performances at Espoo City Theatre in May.

    The year 2021 will mark the centenary of the birth of Joonas Kokkonen. More and more music by him has been finding its way back into concert programmes in the past few years, and his opera Viimeiset kiusaukset (The Last Temptations) is still one of the Finnish operas most often performed. Fennica Gehrman has published a new version of the impressive Requiem he composed in 1981 in memory of his wife. The arrangement by Jouko Linjama is for organ, mixed choir and soloists. The Cello Concerto  has also found an established place in the repertoire; it was heard most recently in the Finals of the International Paulo Cello Competition in October 2018.
