Kimmo Hakola:
Appassionato Op. 76 (2009)

Appassionato for violoncello and piano was written to a commission from the Musical Society of Turku for the Turku Cello Competition in 2010.

True to its title, Appassionato is a passionate, fiery and capricious piece, a virtuoso work in grand Romantic style but with a twinkle of humour.

I fondly hope that its performers will allow the music to liberate their expression – even to the point of going a little wild. My aim, after all, was to write a duo that will yield exhilarating moments of chamber music.

The metronome figures given reflect my perspective on the tempo structure of the piece. However, I am perfectly willing to accommodate interpretations where musical characterization overrides such mundane considerations as metronome figures.

Kimmo Hakola
