Helvi Leiviskä (1902-1982) created a broad-based output of orchestral works, solo songs and chamber music. Her style could be described as moderate modernism, deriving influences from multiple sources such as late Romanticism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Existentialism and Neo-Classicism. Leiviskä's output is characterised by philosophical and religious themes, images of nature and narrative structures. Many of her works focus on human existential angst and spiritual searching and growth.

NEWS & EVENTS

The Partita Concertante for cello and ensemble by Olli Kortekangas was commissioned and premiered at the Naantali Music Festival on 15 June. Also on the programme was his church opera Ende und Beginn. The festival also payed tribute to the late Jaakko Kuusisto with several performances of works by him.
At the Musica Kalevi Aho festival in Forssa, the Pori Sinfonietta conducted by Tibor Bogányi played works by Kalevi Aho on 18 June. There was also chamber music in the festival programme.
Timo-Juhani Kyllönen's monologue opera Ilona Irti Op. 100 to the libretto by Leena Lehtolainen is to be premiered at the Organ Night and Aria festival in Espoo on 18 August. The opera was commissioned by the festival and will be performed by Aurora Marthens and the Trio Roozeman.

This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Helvi Leiviskä. Fennica Gehrman has published some sought-after chamber works by her, including her Piano Quartet, Piano Trio and Sonata for Violin and Piano. Also some other pieces have been dug out of the archives. Revised editions of Leiviskä's orchestral works have also been made available, and a few can be heard in autumn 2022: the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra will perform her Sinfonia Brevis on 21 September with Dalia Stasevska conducting, and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Anna-Maria Helsing will play her Second Symphony on 6 December.

Composer Jyrki Linjama is celebrating his 60th anniversary this year. Linjama is a composer especially known for his church music although his work list consists equally of sacred and more profane music. He has composed a wealth of chamber, vocal and instrumental works including several pieces for organ. His impressive opera Three Letters to Laestadius takes a stand against bigotry and the narrow role of women in religious circles.

Lotta Wennäkoski is one of the four composers in a commissioning project initiated by the Danish String Quartet pairing new works with Schubert’s chamber music. Wennäkoski’s quartet Pige was premiered on 21 April at Carnegie Hall, and after that there will be performances at several venues (Cal Performances, Vancouver Recital Society, UC Santa Barbara Arts & Lectures, Flagey & Muziekgebouw). Wennäkoski has also been the Finnish RSO’s spotlight composer for this season. Her Harp Concerto "Sigla" was be premiered on 18 May with Sivan Magen as the soloist.

Fennica Gehrman has entered into a partnership with four new composers. Timo Alakotila (b. 1959) is a prolific musician, composer and arranger and a well-known name in folk music circles. Publishing agreements have been made for his concert pieces. Lauri Mäntysaari has won an established foothold as one of the most interesting Finnish composers born in the 1980s. Fennica will publish a selection of his chamber music. Lara Poe and Petros Paukkunen, both born in the 1990s, are recent additions to our catalogue. Finnish-American Poe has already won international acclaim for her orchestral and ensemble works. Paukkunen recently delighted listeners with his effervescent orchestral work Touched by Sacred Fire.

Matthew Whittall will have a residency with the Vancouver Chamber Choir in 2022-2023 including performances of his works This Advent Moon, As One Listens to the Rain  and Songs of Travel – a recent piece commissioned by the Carice Singers and Spira Ensemble. The residency will end with a world premiere of a new work in spring 2023. Whittall is also Associate Composer of the Carice Singers, and the choir has plans to record his works in the near future.
The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra has commissioned a work from him as part of its Helsinki Variations series. Hiljaisuus puhuu (Silence Speaks) will be premiered in autumn 2022.

Paavo Heininen died on 18 January 2022. His unparallel creativity and intellect will be greatly missed. Heininen was a prolific composer whose oeuvre ranges from solo pieces and chamber music to large-scale works such as the operas The Knife and The Damask Drum. He is also known for his valuable work as Professor of Composition at the Sibelius Academy. Heininen's work as a symphonist was an essential part of his career. He composed two symphonies (Nos. 7 and 8) and several other pieces during recent years. Many of them have not been premiered yet such as the eight symphony which was to be his last.
