Armas Järnefelt (1869–1958) composed his Festouverture (Festive Overture) for the official opening of the Finnish National Theatre on 9 April 1902. This was a great event in the history of Finnish theatre, for it meant that the Finnish Theatre founded by Kaarlo and Emilie Bergbom in 1872 at last had a home of its own. The 8- minute overture is a jubilant example of Järnefelt’s orchestral writing, through which he introduced a new, Wagnerian voice into Finnish music.

Uuno Klami probably began composing the C minor Sonata as early as May 1920. He completed two movements but only sketched the finale. The reason why he never finished it may be that he began composing a Viola Sonata at around the same time. In 2016 composer Eero Kesti edited Klami’s Viola Sonata when ne noticed that the main sections of the two sonatas' finales are very similar even though they were in different keys. This last movement is reconstructed by Eero Kesti using Klami's viola sonata.

Einar Englund's (1916–99) musical language is based on sweeping terms and great symphonic lines. As a neo-classicist his music is based on tonality and includes long, compact and even romantic melodic lines side by side with spicy dissonances, energetic rhythm and vigorous orchestration. Serenata for string orchestra (1983, dur. 20') is divided in four movements, including a nostalgic menuetto and an energetic and airy Finale with Bartók-like turns.

Premiered in September 1979, DIA op. 36, with its wedge form "refers to the idea of an arrow pointing through the multidimensional musical space of the piece — the beginning of a trajectory crossing through all of it, visiting every point, but a trajectory free of any preordained form or curvature." The grand old man of Finnish Modernism Paavo Heininen (b. 1938) sees form as an idea of time and reflects it in one continuous movement with five distinct sections.

Fennica Gehrman has signed a publishing agreement for a Concert Overture by Sibelius. Based on material found while studying the manuscript of the opera The Maiden in the Tower, it was discovered by the conductor Tuomas Hannikainen, following references made by Sibelius himself. A significant work that, according to Hannikainen, stands up well on its own, it lasts 11–12 minutes and was conducted by Sibelius at concerts of his works in Turku. The score is scheduled for publication in autumn 2019.
