Uuno Klami (1900–1961) became one of the leading Finnish Modernists during the 1920s. His sonata for viola and piano in B flat minor (1920) stayed forgotten for a long time until in 2016 the violist Eero Kesti took the demanding task of editing the very challenging manuscript which was full of unclear corrections. The sonata has impressionistic and romantic features and is surprisingly mature and original, considering the young age of the composer. Duration ca. 21 min.

This piano piece is a fantasy meditation on the Train/Spaceship chords in the opera "Einstein on the Beach" by Philip Glass. There is something strange in the repeating five-chord progression (Fm – Db – A – B7 – E) "because it never fails to lift the audience to its feet". Nuorvala's piece was written in 2020 for pianist Nicolas Horvath’s Hommage à Glass project. Duration 6'30.

BIS Records’ new Kalevi Aho CD has had a truly enthusiastic reception in the media. Containing the Percussion Concerto Sieidi and the 5th Symphony, it was voted Music Web’s record of the month in October, and the Symphony made a stunning impact on the critic. In the Gramophone magazine the soloist, Colin Currie, writes about Sieidi, one of the best-loved and most frequently performed of all the percussion concertos: “Part of this composer’s mastery is the structural backbone to all his music, and the architectural concept of this piece is frankly fantastic.”  Other reviews have hailed Sieidi as wild and exotic.

Antti Auvinen has been much in the limelight due to his new CD, which sold out even before its official release. His music is said to include many superlatives such as “the most energy or the most extreme effects”. The Ondine disc by the Finnish RSO and Hannu Lintu includes three works – Junker Twist, Himmel Punk and Turbo Aria  – and has met with great enthusiasm. According to the critics, Auvinen’s finest talent is in the chillingly clear musical images that emerge from the pressurised fury. His timbral palette and its masterful handling are astounding. After the ‘punkier’ tones, we are transported to heavenly, strangely luminous and glowing spheres in which Auvinen convincingly demonstrates that he truly does have more strings to his bow than noise and tumult.
