The Tunnel at the End of the Light is a commission by the Lieksa Brass Festival for its International Tuba Competition in 2023. The playful work employs quirky rhythms and changing meters, while exploring the upper and lower register of the tuba. NEWS & EVENTS

Olli Kortekangas' commission from the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Songs of Meena, received enthusiastic feedback from the press and audiences alike. The song cycle was premiered on 30 November by the Helsinki PO, conducted by Osmo Vänskä. The soloist was Tuuli Takala. The texts to this work for soprano and orchestra are by Meena Alexander, an Americanised poet of Indian descent.

Iiro Rantala's Christmas Oratorio (Jouluoratorio) was performed at a concert given by the Cantores Minores boys’ choir at the Helsinki Music Centre on 4 December 2022. Rantala has revised the orchestration of this 10-year-old work and added more vocal parts, thereby making it longer. With a libretto by Jaakko Heinimäki, it is an optimistic work, a pleasure to sing, and not without the familiar Rantala humour. The Oratorio music is now available in a new, professionally edited edition.

Veli-Matti Puumala’s Violin Concerto Tree of Memories, a Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra commission, was premiered on 6 December at the orchestra’s Independence Day concert. According to Puumala, the concerto deals with memory and memories, the ability to remember and recollect and the loss of memory and memories. He wrote it specifically for the soloist, Carolin Widmann – her violin sound and her infinitely adaptable musicianship.

Alex Freeman's choral symphony Ghost Light received its world premiere on 11 November. It was a commission from the Helsinki Music Centre Choir to celebrate its 10th anniversary. It is a stunning, expansive, 50-minute work for chorus and symphony orchestra, drawing upon the ecstatic optimism and imagery in the poetry of Walt Whitman and others. Nils Schweckendiek conducted the premiere with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. You can see and hear the concert on Helsinki-kanava until 25. November.

Composer and conductor Kari Tikka died on 17. October. He started his career as oboist and later became a conductor at the Finnish National Opera, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Opera of Stockholm and the Vivo Symphony Orchestra which he founded. Kari Tikka enriched the Finnish music scene with his works, many of which had religious themes. For him the texts of the Bible were a great source of inspiration and comfort. His opera Luther has been performed several times around the world and his oeuvre includes also other stage works, music for the church, orchestral and chamber music and more than 150 songs, among them the popular Armolaulu (Grace Song).

The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra commissioned a work from Matthew Whittall as part of its Helsinki Variations series for a premiere on 14. October. Hiljaisuus puhuu (Silence Speaks) is inspired by a Christmas song by Jean Sibelius. “I am a choral singer myself and wanted to use Finnish choral singing as the basis of my work,” says Whittall of his work.

Antti Auvinen and Iiro Rantala were awarded by the Finnish Music Publishers Association on 5. September. Auvinen was chosen as Composer of the Year in the contemporary/classical music genre. Iiro Rantala was chosen as Crossover Composer of the Year.

ja Leena Lehtolaisen monologiooppera Ilona Irti kantaesitettiin Espoon Urkuyö ja aaria -festivaalilla 18. elokuuta, esiintyjinä sopraano Aurora Marthens ja Trio Roozeman. This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Helvi Leiviskä. Fennica Gehrman has published some sought-after chamber works by her, including her Piano Quartet, Piano Trio and Sonata for Violin and Piano. Also some other pieces have been dug out of the archives. Revised editions of Leiviskä's orchestral works have also been made available, and a few can be heard in autumn 2022: the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra will perform her Sinfonia Brevis on 21 September with Dalia Stasevska conducting, and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra under Anna-Maria Helsing will play her Second Symphony on 6 December.
