Hele (2018) was written for the musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. It is set up for an ensemble consisting of woodwind quintet, trumpet, percussion and string quintet. Wennäkoski tells about the process: “A composer works with sounds and time, but also with emotions and images. When starting a new score I usually try to find an 'overall idea' which can be anything from an atmosphere to a phenomenon of any kind. Hele is Finnish for a grace note – thus a very specific expression. It is also very close to a word meaning bright and light as well.”

The six-movement Per speculum in enigmatae suite (Through a glass, darkly) is published for the first time. Melartin assembled it from different separate pieces. The biblical heading maybe has a spiritual rather than a religious connotation, though some of the movements – and the title – are programmatic.

This work is scored for a string orchestra of twenty players. The piano part is honouring the ‘Beethovenian-Lisztian-Brahmsian’ pianistic tradition. At times it is lean and linear, but the work also contains multi-layered, full-toned piano textures and massive rolling octaves. The 30-minute concerto requires great artistry on the part of the performer. It comprises 3 movements played without a break. Study score: 55011-641-2, € 34,50 Buy now

It consists of short, exquisite questions which force the reader to look at things from an entirely new perspective. Aho selected some of the texts for this 24-minute song cycle (2006) and combined their Finnish translation (by Katja Kallio) into eleven sets of questions.
